Video and links

This will probably be the last Ryan for Heisman video. All votes must be in following Saturday's games. I don't think Ryan will win. Hopefully he gets invited to the ceremony. Hats off to Vince '03 who put these clips together all season.

AJ Brooks is done for the season and probably his career. He beat some kid to a pulp Saturday night/Sunday morning. One of the most frustrating things about being a fan of college sports is watching talented kids do stupid things and waste great opportunities.

Great feature on Jags in the Washington Post.

Ryan, Purvis, and Silva made first team ACC. There were a few suprises among the other names. The only real injustice was Callender making second team. He's been the best back in the ACC. Buried in this notebook is an update on our tickets sales. Not good news. If you cannot make it to this game yet can spare the $70, buy a ticket through BC. Donate it. Eat it. Whatever you want to do. Every bit helps. If we don't sell our allotment we will never get invited to a major bowl again.

The ticket sales have not been strong in Jacksonville either. I think this might be the last ACC Championship Game held there for a few years.

Future Eagle Colin Larmond continues to carry his team in the New Jersey playoffs.

Nice article on how the ACC Champion soccer team came together.

"Ticket sales at BC for the ACC Championship Game in Jacksonville, Fla., reportedly have been slow, with less than 5,000 having been sold."

How many do we get in total to sell? Why aren't we pleading with wealthy alum to buy up some of these tickets?

I'd like to have the option of going to the Peach or Gator Bowls in future years if we don't make the BCS.

I'm going. I'm excited. But we need to sell more tickets!

An update on those Ryan for Heisman Videos:

I will be making one for the ACC Championship game and for the Bowl game. Even if he doesn't win he has the draft comming up. The Ryan Campaign will not end in Jagsonville.

Also I think ticket sales are so poor for Jacksonville because of how difficult it is to get there. There aren't many direct flights and all flights are pretty expensive. I know many people that want to go but just can't because its over $400 to just fly there. Really BC should charter a 2nd plane and sell tickets on that to Alumni for a discounted rate.

Reading the other article, we have to guarantee 10,000 tickets sold. No good.

Looked at bus and train fares, they're significantly cheaper than flights, if you were booking today.

For example, I found train tickets leaving Boston South at 9:35AM on Friday Nov 30 and arriving in Jacksonville at 9:20AM Dec 1. Then after a day at the stadium you could turn around and hop on the 8:15PM departure on Dec 1 and be back in Boston late Sunday night all for a total of $282.60 with a AAA card. If you can stomach the train marathons, you could save a decent chunk of change. Plenty of time available to sit and study for finals too, since I'm directing this at students primarily.

I would love to go, but can't. However, I bought and donated a ticket to the ACCCG and will do the same for whatever bowl they go to.

I purchased some VIP seats through StubHub, but in reading this blog etc. I realized that I should buy some through the BC Ticket Office as well to support our ticket sales efforts.

I just did that and they will be donated per Ticket Office Policy.

The reason I purchased through the other source was because I wanted to guarantee my self seats as close to the 50 yard line as I could get (I got the 45).

Let's go BC

I'm sorry it is so costly for younger fans and students to get to this game from the Boston area and the Northeast. Many of those same fans and students will be flying home in another two weeks for semester break and Christmas, etc., so this is an issue for BC to tackle and solve.

I have been hoping that BC would pick up some fans nationally to help us fill these seats.

VT will bring 25,000 fans, and I understand that Boston and BC is an entirely different atmosphere than Blacksburg, VA. But hopefully we'll have our 10,000 fans there, at least.

Here is where you can donate a ticket for the ACC CG. Great option for those of us who can't make the game but still want to support ticket sales.

Man i was all set to go - then life gets in the way. One by one my buddies start backing out and then my wife (also a BC grad) lays out my responsibilities with the family starting Friday and going through Sunday....Oh well. (This from a woman that actually went to the Liberty Bowl and the Cotton Bowl!) I have a dead solid lock promise on the Orange Bowl from her!

Y'all youngsters that read this blog - listen to Bill. There will be a point when you have enough money but much less of the most valuable commidity there is - time. You can only make more of one of these...

However, I did my duty and bought two tickets to donate. Guys like Bill and Big Jack keep me honest!

Go Eagles. I'll be screaming at my TV like I'm there.

As I get older, I would like the opportunity to go to more bowls. But I just can't get up for going to Boise, San Francisco, Charlotte, or Nashville year in, year out.

We need to improve our travel rep. We need to sell these tickets.

See you on Saturday! Go BC!

I'm going, as are a number of people in my tailgating group. But we bought plane tickets, etc, the day after the Clemson game so the prices weren't that bad. For people looking now, they're horrible.

I'm afraid some of the blame for the slow sales needs to rest with the Athletic Department. Sure, there are the Dodd Travel official trips down to Jax but they are a total rip off. Nothing that students or recent grads could afford. Could the school charter a few planes to get people down there? You'd think so, but they're not doing it. They could even charter a few busses...it's a 20 hour ride, but I know that over 1,000 kids at BC go that far every spring for Applachia trips and would likely be willing to do so for the game. But, the school has done nothing to that end. Let's face it, if you have to sell 10,000tickets, to a relatively small fan base, you need to take some action--to do SOMETHING--to help fans get down there. There will always be people who have an excuse not to go who wouldn't go anyway; but I really think that a bunch of the people who are currently saying "I'd go, but I can't afford the airfare" mean it. In my opinion, it's up to the school to provide an alternative.

Asking 10,000 people to pony up close to a grand for a weekend--the same people who pay $3,500 for parking passes, and $x for donor-based seating--well, that's asking a lot.

I just wish BC would create some type of package to make the whole thing really affordable to its students. I'm just imagining even buses or something that can get a bunch of students down there at a realistic price. I know a bunch of other schools (In particular Wisconsin) offers student packages to all its away games at a small loss so that they can have a big traveling group. If BC really wants its students to go, make it reasonable and realistic.

re: donating a ticket - does bc end up doing anything w/ those tickets? or are they just eating them?

as much as i'd like to increase our travel rep, seems like a waste b/c the positive reputation is gonna come from the fans that are actually at the stadium. that being said, would anyone be interested in trying to figure out a way to get some tickets into the hands of students? i was thinking about making a craigslist post, offering to buy a ticket for someone if they can show me some proof they're actually going down there (or at least something along those lines). anyone have any better ideas?

ATL_eagle said...

eagles8, the donated tickets go to local students in Jax. Boys and Girls clubs and pop warner type teams.

America said...

I think eagles8 has a good idea. Lets even step it up a bit though. I think there are enough alumni on this blog that would be willing to chip in.
We have a couple days to do this. How could we get tickets into the hands of students who would love to go but can't afford it? I would be in.

America said...

Hey guys I just sent an email over to a sports marketing guy I know at BC asking him about donateing tickets to current students. I will let you know what he says. It would be amazing if we could get a bunch of alumni together to help charter a bus or something.

eagle1331 said...

As a student, I appreciate what you guys are trying to do. I just don't think it is the cost of the ticket that is holding people back. It's the airfare and hotels. I know I personally would not be going if it weren't for the fact that I have a friend on the team to get me a ticket and my dad gave me airfare for christmas...

America said...

I understand that but I think if the alumni and school came together to take some of the burden off of the student it might creat more interest.

for the current students, an RV might be the way to go..

i know i had some of the best times of my 4 years on the RV out to south bend

Hey I have some feedback.

1) Charter Busses: The school did look into this. I guess they decided against it because of liability issues.
2) Ticket prices are not the issue students get tickets for $40
3) The school has been working closely with the students to try and get them to the game. Its unfortunately a bad week for the game.
4) 3500 tickets have been sold so far. 1/3 of those in the past 3 days.

Loving the creativity and generosity being thrown around on this board. I graduated in the spring of this year and I'm even more broke now than I was as a student. Sob Sob- I know... just like everyone else. Might be going the "christmas present" route too. Airfare from here (chicago) is also the issue for me as opposed to the game tickets ($350+). Hotel is a non issue because I'm likely flying in Saturday morning and out Sunday night.

Hotel should really be a non issue for anyone under 25 because, from experience, you can cram about 15 of us youngsters into a single hotel room (dibs on bathtub).

The athletic department needs this kind of think tank.

I guarantee that there are hundreds of current BC students that would go for the chartered bus. This works like a charm for the Badgers. I'm sure it's a liability thing that BC is worried about, typical.

Go Eagles

for any entrepreneurial students out there.. sack up and get some friends together to put a down payment down to charter a bus. then set up a paypal site, write up a paragraph about how much you want guys want to get down to j-ville, and plug it on this site, eagleaction, etc. if you do it right, i guarantee you'll find some alumni to help subsidize the trip, even on this short of notice. tough to expect a completely free lunch, but if you end up paying $50 a person for roundtrip transportation, that's tough to beat.

Bus trip - 1981 Sweet Sixteen - John Bagley was a junior, Michael Adams was a freshman. The now famous Bruce Pearl put the trip together and we got 50 guys and two kegs. The bus driver sang R&B songs along with the tape player at the top of his lungs and wondered where he could find a massage parlor in Indiana. Left Boston on Thursday and got to Bloomingon 20 hours later or so - packed 6 or 8 guys to a Holiday Inn room, played full contact nerf basketball using upside down lampshades as baskets.

You want memorable -- put 50 BC guys who have been on the road and drinking into a Bob Evans and have them hit the buffet - THAT made an impression on the locals.

Painted Eagles on our face and screamed our lungs out from the first rows of Assembly Hall. The guys from the team were over high fiving during warm ups. We lost to St. Joes (a long and sad story)and ended up heading home early (the next game would have been against eventual champion Inidiana at IU!) But not before some guys made the bus driver pull over so they could try and steal an I-69 road sign (Hey, it was college, you are supposed to act like an idiot.)

It's 26 1/2 years later and I remember most of it like it was yesterday. (OK parts are a little blurry). May not have been luxury but damn, I wish I could do it again.

If some students do that I promise to chip in a couple of hundred, at least.

Great story ORD Eagle. Unfortunately, BC Law has graduated too many students since then and now you cannot have fun due to the fear of being sued.

I can't believe our society is so paranoid that the university is fearful of chartering buses due to liability concerns! We Americans have sued the fun right out of life.

Bravesbill said...

The liability issue is easy to get around. BC is just copping out and making it seem like they have their hands tied. All BC needs to do is have all students who want to attend sign a waiver. Make them waive any litigation rights they would have if something happens. Let them sign something that says BC is not liable for anything that happens. That's always done for riskier things such as bungee jumping or sky diving.

Alex F. said...

HAHAHA, nice shot of me at :22 of the Ryan video

ORDEagle said...

The bus trip was strictly a private, student driven venture - not school sponsorship and therefore no worries about liability. Can't sue someone with nothing!
