Shaughnessy on the bandwagon (sort of) and other links

Shaughnessy filled this article with plenty of backhanded compliments. Despite the cheap shots, I think he is right -- BC is the only true big time program in Boston for football and hoops. I also think Dan's tone has softened since his son became an Eagle.

Craig Smith is still not over our last trip to the Metrodome.

A few more facts about the game.

We are not a top seed, but Baldwin is considered one of the power players in the tourney.

More on BC-BU from NESN.com. (Thanks to Nick P. for the link.)

I doubted at first, but now I believe that BJ could go top 5.

Absolutely, his BC articles have changed a lot since his son became a student. A night & day difference. Curly haired boyfriend.

The BC-Nova game is still one of the most painful memories as a Boston sports fan - honestly, it probably hurt more than Boone beating the Sox in 03. Oh man, why did that game have to go into overtime?! Dudley got fouled as he hit his 3 at the end of regulation. Imagine he hits his free throw and we win without Craig getting hurt; then we could have played UF at full strength. Oh man that game still stings.

BC-Nova was terrible. Terrible. As a Boston Sports fan (and BC graduate - I was a soph at the time), it is a VERY close second behind Super Bowl 43 as the worst sports moment of my life (ironically, Super Bowl 43 was a great night for everyone outside of New England, by all accounts). I'll always remember that ref calling the travel on Williams when he was wrestling with Kyle Lowry for the ball - rotating his arms SO slowly, as if he was unsure himself of his own call. Oh man. My poor channel-changer stood no chance versus the wall that I threw it against.

I'm with ya, Brian. It's almost like the Kennedy assassination. Everyone remembers where they were for that game.

I was on my knees cursing, holding on to a bar stool with friends while in Illinois.

I *still* say we matched up VERY well with Florida that year. I'm not sure we would have won the game, but I can promise you it would have been extremely close.

Yeah, I was at a rehersal dinner for a good friend. Kept going to the bar part of the restaurant and seeing BC on cruise control & a big lead, then it got close, then the OT & the goaltending, and the realization we really had a good shot at winning the whole thing and it was gone.

The BC-NOVA game hurt in so many ways. The way we lost a 16 point lead. The fact that the winning bucket didn't even go through the hoop. The fact that Dudley simply lost his man through a double screen that allowed the "bucket".

But most of all it hurt because it was our best chance to take the whole thing.

I was at Game On watching with a couple Nova alums (who ironically I ran into at Game On last niht watching the Nova game) and a ton of fellow BC alums. Still hurts knowing what could have been.

I agree, we could have won it all that year. Our flex offense (as much as I hate it sometimes) would have given Florida fits. Craig and Dudley would have scored on Horford and Brewer. And old Smokey McGee Sean Williams would have swatted Joakim Noah out of the building. I believe some sports columnist at the NYTimes actually picked us to advance to the finals. I was at Patty O's in NYC, the whole crowd was going nuts and then went dead silent. Terrible memories. Ah coulda woulda shoulda

Wow, painful to read these comments and relive those memories. Galvin is right, Pete Thamel from the NYT picked us to win it all, and it wasn't THAT crazy a prediction. I think we'll get there again, as this team has a good chance to be great in a year or two, but I don't know if we'll ever have as likeable a team without Dudley and C Smith in there.

i was in the basement of mcelroy engineering a BC hockey game for ZBC, running into the common room as often as possible watching the game by myself on the tiny TV. what a devastating night.

A lot of people had BC in the Final Four that year. I believe even Dickie V had BC advancing out of that region. However, they obviously don't watch enough BC athletics: always the bridesmaid never the bride.

Got you all beat... I was in Philly with Nova fans (my roomate at the time was an obnoxiously passionate Nova fan). Some fat guy did the worm after that goaltending call. I hated Nova before, but I will ALWAYS root against them now. (I also went to Saint Joe's for grad school, so the Nova hatred continues)

I couldn't watch that game - can't remember why - and am glad to this day that I didn't. In any case, I'm off to Minneapolis (the entire Omaha Alumni chapter, all three of us, is driving up) in a few minutes. Hope to see a good BC showing, on the court and in the stands. GO EAGLES! FOR BOSTON!

Galvin said...

Hahaha JP does have us all beat. Thinking about a fat guy doing the worm just made me laugh out loud in my office. God I hate Nova.

Not to throw salt on the wounds or whatever, but wanted to point out that the New York Times actually picked Boston Coll. to win it all that year. I still have the NYT.com graphic as proof. We should have won it all that year.
