Two steps forward, two steps back: Boisture to MSU

Any question as to why we went so hard after Josh Bordner was answered today when Joe Boisture confirmed that he dropped BC and will play for Michigan State. This rumor had been floating for a few days. Toss it up to the fickle nature of high school kids. This happened under TOB. It happened under Jags and will happen to Spaz in the future.

I don't think anyone in the football offices cares about my opinion, but Boisture is a reminder that you have to sell BC for what it is. You cannot sell the coach or the depth chart. Those things might work but they can get kids to your school for the wrong reasons. You have to sell the total package at BC and spend that much more time IDing the right kids for the program. Best of luck to Boisture. I am fine with Bordner.

I don't know what you are talking about Bill - Boisture was the light at the end of the dark tunnel that this year was shaping up to be. We've taken a flier on a 25 year, had our other top QB prospects commit elsewhere, and now we take a nobody and Boisture, our first blue-chip recruit in years, backs off. This is awful news. I am still very impressed with the team's recruiting this year, but you have to wonder if they just assumed Boisture was solid and opened the door for these other schools...

I should learn not to care about recruiting by now.

I really, REALLY wanted Boisture. As Eagle1331 said, he was the light at the end of the tunnel.

This sucks hairy goat balls.

I'm with eagle1331...this is terrible news. I don't normally get too up or down with recruits, because both our football and basketball programs have done a solid job of finding diamonds in the rough. But our quarterback situation is a complete mess right now, and it doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon.

You can't put too much stock in a guy who is 8 months from signing on the line. If you do, you're just asking for disappointment. When will everyone learn? My advice is move on Eagle fans.

I hope either Tuggle or Boek or both shut us all up. The Boisture deal was predictable when we went after 15 other quarterbacks, including a 25 year old baseball player.

For those of us who say "get as many good quarterbacks as possible", etc - I do not agree. We truly reached that point of diminishing returns.

Now that Boisture is gone, we may indeed need a Russell Wilson type quarterback now - and Tuggle and Boek give us the best chance.

Go BC - bring in some "hogs" - bring in some more DLs, bring in some LBs, etc - and let's keep doing it to the ACC.

Oh my God, how far we have devolved. Why would any of you get so excited about an unsigned recruit? And why get so emotionally involved? This guy was not going to start as a freshman and even if he did, it would be a mess a la Jimmy Clausen or Brady Quinn. Heck, the best QB in BC history, Matt Ryan, did not even start as a freshman (by the way he was a mediocre 3 star...shows you what Rivals knows) Further, there is no way you can truly tell if Boisture will be great as a college player. It is impossible to rate players due to the factors involved: supporting cast, size of high school, level of competition, etc.

I'm sure Boisture will be a great player for Michigan State. Fine. But, why abandon Boeck, Tuggle, Shinskie and Marscovetra, the signed players? Bordner sounds promising, but he is only a verbal. Can't get excited yet.

And Big Jack Crack, I respectfully disagree about BC getting a Russell Wilson type. We are one of 12 schools in the country that runs a pro-style offense. Everyone else runs a variation of the spread. We are going to have dozens of pro-style QBs interested in BC each year and I think we will have plenty of great options to select.

Finally, look at the BC pedigree. Flutie, both Hasselbecks, St. Pierre and now Ryan have all played in the NFL the past few years. We are a QB school and we will be able to attract great future QBs.

eagleboston - good point. I should have said we need a Flutie type quarterback - one who runs the pro-style offense, but who can move when he has to move. I don't really like the spread and the no huddle. I do like to see our guys jump out of the huddle with confidence.

Tuggle and Boek give us the best chance, until we get another 6'5" plus guy who can hang in there and really see the field. Justin and Codi won't have Flutie's arm, etc - but they well have his desire, like Paul Peterson - and wouldn't that be just great!

By the way, doesn't Wilson run when other things break down, or was he running before he may have had to run?

One Brian St. Pierre (or Tim Hasselbeck) does not a QB school make. The list is stronger without those two.

How long until people start dogging Boisture like Dominique Davis?

conlonc said...

Big Jack: Tranquill's offense is pro and also heavily employs the no huddle.

Coast: too late. The fanboard crowd was throwing him under the bus two hours before you posted that. Such a delightful bunch.

You just wish kids wouldn't commit and keep bragging about how they are solid and won't waver....

What if the staff took his word and didn't go get Shinskie and Bordner?
It's a selfish move by a kid, especially at a key position like QB, to do it (commit someplace you don't want in the first place - not the transferring). Certainly he did it early enough to leave us plenty of time, but why commit in the first place?

I guess our staff must have had a good idea the whole time if they offered Bordner on Sunday.

Big Jack Krack said...

Thanks conlonc - I thought I read somewhere that Tranquill uses the no huddle, but I wasn't sure - I guess I'll have to get used to it.

The last time I was this down on BC football was TOB's 2nd year. We have come full circle.

Maybe this changes things drastically, maybe not. This year remains unaffected, and, quite frankly, a source of concern.

Who knows how the young kids will develop? A 17 year old kid changed his mind. I don't lose any sleep over anything a 17 year old says or does. We move on. Maybe the answer is already on campus. Time will tell.

Ah, if we could only be a perfect fan in the eyes of EagleBoston, all would be fine.

How silly of us to get emotionally invested in our alma mater.

I'm not saying it's wise--but it's sports, man...you don't have to tell me it's "foolish" or whatever to get invested or care about a recruit, or a player, or a game, or a season, or a coach, or an opponent, or fans (I could go on), but we do anyway.

Please pack up the holier than thou act and try to sell it back to Notre Dame. I don't have any use for it.

Alright BCMIke, let me aks you this, did you cry over a lost recruit 20 years ago? No, because we had no clue before the Internet era. It did not matter then and it does not matter now. Eagle in Atlanta said as much in this post. Why are you not blasting him? And it is not holier than thou to reprimand a fan base that gets so wrapped up in recruiting that is notoriously unreliable. BC fans if anyone should know this. How many players has BC placed in the NFL that no one else wanted out of high school?

The bottom line is this is not going to matter in the long run and we will get a QB just as good as Boisture. I would argue that next to USC, BC has placed more successful QB's in the NFL in the past 10 years. How many other schools can say they have 2 QB starters every Sunday? This class does not even sign until well after the next football season so why worry about this now?

All recruits are a mystery until they actually get enough playing time to show what they can do, so I don't really care about Boisture. What annoys me is that is just feels like more of that perpetual disrespect for BC football, this time from a 17 year-old kid, no less. How many four-star recruits flip on their verbal commitment to USC or Texas or Ohio State. Nevermind them, what about ND or VA Tech or Miami? Doesn't happen. I've been rooting for Boek or Tuggle to be the guy, anyway, but Boisture's dis still stings. Interesting that BC went out and offered two 2010 QBs (+ Shinskie) to replace Boisture. Perhaps their learning.

Mark Dantonio at Mich State is becoming a recruiting force, as UM and now BC can attest.
