A Boston College sports blog capturing the highs and lows of being a BC fan living 1,000 miles from Chestnut Hill.
Can anyone tell me what BC has accomplished by not dismissing Spaz earlier this season?
I hate the personal invective against our coach, but even the most blind of his supporters would be hard pressed to defend the coaching decisions at the end of the game. Anytime when you don't play to win, you are a loser. How could anyone think we would have had a better chance to win the game in OT, with our record this year and with the obvious flaws in the team on both sides of the ball. We're playing at home with the crowd on our side, 2 timeouts in our hip pocket, and the karma on our side to win a final home game for a team that wasn't the most talented, but one who spilled their guts in terms of effort on this day which all of the seniors will never forget. To not even give the team a chance to get a few big plays and move the ball into a position to try a game winning field goal by a kicker who has been almost perfect all year just boggles the mind. When you effectively take a knee - or really 3 or 4 knees, in that situation you send a message that you're a loser and it tore the heart out of our players. OT frustration was pre ordained. By the way, where was Deuce when we could have used him the most? I'm sick about this pitiful display of cowardice by the head coach. If I feel this badly, who must the players feel? They played their asses off and my hat is off to them for their efforts. I know they wish they could have played to win.
Its especially tough when you are 2-8 and play not to lose. We do not play to win, and never will with this coach.
Maryland and Rutgers are in serious discussions to join Big 10 according to ESPN. Now, we are defintiely bottom of the heap in the ACC.
We should get a two for one. Fire Spaz and fire Brad Bates. Let Jerry York be the AD. Don't take the AD job if you can't make these kinds of decisions. This ain't miami of Ohio.
what was most hilarious was the draws to end the 4th q. if you are going to "play it safe" there, you take a knee. if you are going to try to win the game, you throw the ball. spaz of course does neither, he runs a freaking HB draw with dudeck two straight times!!! you get the risk of a fumble without the upside of a big play! i mean....it is just baffling incompetence on a week to week and really year to year basis with Spaziani. its the same BS every week -- this guy DOES NOT GET IT.i don't care who coaches the last game since its a lost cause anyway, but confidence in Bates is going to waver with every day that Spaz is allowed to continue to coach this team. throw the fanbase a freaking bone and announce that he won't return in the 2013 season.
Maryland cut a bunch of sports this year, and would have to pay a $50 million exit fee to leave the ACC. why would they do that?i don't really think this would be worrisome for the ACC at all, we could easily fill their spot with someone else.
I have lots of faith in Bates. This game is more about Spaz being a loser.
We would probably get Uconn I am sure, who else is there, $50 million is alot of money, but they also have the under armour alum who could give a decent amount. I am sure Father Leahy has already told Bates to wait till the end of the season, BC just doesn't fire coaches mid-season. Now, if 3 weeks after the season ends we haven't heard anything, then it is time to gripe.
Teddy-This season was already lost by the time Bates was hired. Even now, the guy has barely unpacked his office. I'm fine with him waiting until next Sunday to drop the axe. My patience will start to grow thin after that, however.
Maryland is not going anywhere.
Blauds has probably just posted his best article, this is not a joke. Stating Bates is already lining up names to speak too, etc, etc. He calls out Spaz for the end of regulation as well. Pigs are flying.
The most telling thing for me is that we just lost a game where we had the lead late, allowed the other team to tie, didn't try to score before the end of regulation, and then rolled over in OT....and I don't feel a thing. I'm not even upset. My apathy surprises even myself.
ATL,I just re-read your post from August 2012 on your "Worst Case Scenario for the 2012 Season". 100% accurate through 11 games. Scary....
With the income disparity between the ACC and the Big10, Maryland could easily make up the 50 mil in two or three years. Their financial troubles are precisely the reason why they would leave. I don't think many have internalized just how huge the difference is in TV and Bowl revenue between the ACC and the other major conferences.
I drove over to this game with my kids essentially to just cheer on our players, who have had a very tough year. Frankly, I didn't expect a win. However, this Va Tech team was the worst I've ever seen them. The game was entirely winnable.I truly believe Spaz' actions at the end of the game were a big F-You! to the fanbase. Up to that point, the crowd was into it, the players were fired up, and you could just feel that even though there had been a lot of very poor execution on both sides of the ball, there was a good chance we were going to pull it out. Even if a spirited effort to get a winning field goal in regulation failed, at least there'd have been a sense that we were going to fight to the end. After the first dive up the middle the home crowd was booing loudly. Then, he does it AGAIN!! More booing. Louder. The players are upset. It was all over at that point. No one, I mean NO ONE in the stadium believed there was a real chance of winning it in OT. Taking a knee wasn't waving the white flag. And it wasn't just incompetence. It was Frank Spaziani saying "F*** You!" in the waning moments of his tenure at Alumni Stadium. I was never a Spaz hater before. But now...
We were at the game as well.It would not have surprised me if Spaziani was fired on the field immediately after the game.
What a bum! BC needs to tie upthe payoff related to his (must be) illegal extension in court. We owe this coward nothing.
Bates should have walked out before OT started and fired Spaz on the spot. imagine how popular he would have been! Part of me was happy that we lost in OT so that Spaz couldn't say 'well it worked, didn't it?'
"Maryland is not going anywhere."You sure about that Atl?"The University of Maryland is in talks to join the Big Ten Conference, according to people with direct knowledge of the situation. One said the announcement of Maryland’s move to the Big Ten could be made within days. Another said the University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents was to be presented with a written proposal on Sunday, but has yet to vote on the issue. The board will meet Monday to discuss the issue after receiving a written summary from Wallace D. Loh, the school’s president, and Brit Kirwan, chancellor of the University of Maryland system."http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/university-of-maryland-in-talks-to-join-big-ten/2012/11/17/a9a8cde4-3104-11e2-a30e-5ca76eeec857_story.html
Montel Harris had a decent day today.
Just when it couldn't get any worse, Notre Dame looks like they'll be going to BCS Title game.
Check out Nick Clancy's twitter @nickclancy54. He gives a nice thank you to BC fans for all of the support and memories at Alumni, etc. Not easy to do the way his last game at Alumni ended. Some douchebag starts attacking him about making tackles 10 yards downfield...Clancy handles it with complete class, explains that the players are very frustrated but giving it their all, etc. Makes me proud to be an Eagle. We Are BC!!
I could be wrong on the Maryland thing, but I think there is a lot of questions to answer. Where is Maryland getting the money for the exit fee? And why is the Big Ten expanding? The only way this makes sense is if they can get the Big Ten network as a premium network in MD and NJ. That is a tough fight.
The ACC may waive the exit fee for Maryland. Especially if Notre Dame agrees to join the ACC full time.
"He was just a coward and that was the worst luck any man could have." - Ernest HemingwaySpaz per Blauds:“There were a lot of factors that were involved,” said Spaziani .”We ran the draw hoping we were going to get a good play on first down and then we were going to up-tempo it. They could have made us punt, we could have thrown an incompletion. We could have wound up punting and they kick a field goal and the game is over. We could have done some positive stuff. We were backed up and we felt our better chance was to go into overtime.”Here is what Spaz really is saying: I am a gutless coward. I have no business leading young men. I am a disgrace and I know it.
I've followed BC football since 1970, from the days when they were a non-entity, to the exciting Flutie era and all the good things that his success led to, to the disappointing Henning years, to TOB, to the heady days of Matty Ice and then Herzy and Kuechly. Frank Spaziani has taken a program that had clawed its way to consistent respectability and turned it into a laughingstock. He has been gutless and blatantly incompetent, and has insulted the players by consistently demonstrating that he lacks faith in them. He always finds someone else to blame, when he - with his loser mentality - is the real culprit.I think of Stanford, Notre Dame, even Northwestern... schools with similarly outstanding academics, and, currently, much better football programs. We have become used to success - maybe even a little spoiled by it - and I am outraged that this debacle has been allowed to unfold, aided and abetted by GDF. Spaz should have been fired at the same time. His spectacular display of gutlessness in today's game was emblematic of his pitiful tenure.Brad Bates, you better get this next hire right, and get it right quickly. Keep our motto, "Ever to Excel" in mind; it has been sadly neglected during this loser's tenure, and the program has paid a heavy price.
A team with 2 wins has nothing to lose. In a situation with nothing to lose, Frank Spaziani played not to lose. And he lost.
The draw and taking a knee at the end of reg. was the fitting end to when will be known as the 'Spaz Error' 6 more days
