Notre Dame runs all over BC

When you lose by 29 at home to your "rival" in Year 5, there are plenty of problems. Talent and scheme are clearly issues. But I don't think the coach is doing everything he can to win. At least he didn't in this game. At the end of the half following an interception, Addazio called a time killing draw. No pass for the endzone. Nothing creative. Just a conservative dumb play. It sends a message to the players and the fans. It also sends a message to your new boss.

I would say this was a bad loss, but all the blowouts are starting to blend together. I think Addazio is done now. The discussion just shifts to when to fire him and who to hire.

Postgame Periscope below. Thanks for those who joined.

I will have grades and thoughts up late Sunday.

As a long time BC fan it hurt to see comment in SBNation site saying " BC is bad. The committee won’t care much about an Irish win."

Can't get lower than that folks but nothing seems to matter. Remember it once wasn't like that. I can think of very few times I've ever read in a sports site such a damning comment.

Up until lost the will to compete at about 30 seconds to go in the first half, I enjoyed the game. It was a competitive game and BC surprised me. They looked good. Brown looked like a new man. The OL was opening up holes. There was hope. Even if they lost I thought the first half was good football competition

Up. Until that moment.

The Air then went out of the balloon.

Of course Daz forgot to make half time adjustments too. There is that.

What are the arguments for keeping Daz in place until the end of the season as opposed to firing him now? I can't think of many that would advocate keeping the status quo.

XPhaktor said...

I don't agree with keeping Adazzio on any further. The AD should do right by the players that bought the b.s. and stuck around (Landry in particular) and move on from the coach immediately. You cannot go to the house of the defending national champs in this current state, with the same game plan, same mentality and the same coach.

If I were a recruit, I'd actually be happy to see an interim guy come in, open up the playbook and let the athletes make plays. An interim doesn't care about next year or the press or expectations...he just wants to compete. In trying to prove himself, the players model the behavior and if the message is effective, run through a wall for him. Yes, they will lose. That is certain. However, its the manner in which you lose that shows a team's heart and the effectiveness of a coaching staff in conveying a message even in defeat.

This is the message those kids in that locker room need. Recruits see that and know that that program is willing to do whatever it takes to win; on the flip side, they also see how the current coaching staff uses players that were once highly regarded recruits. It can't always be the players' fault. Get the qb coach, o line coach, te, wr or rb coach to take over and I guarantee that games will be more entertaining because the kids will play and have fun, not trapped in a scared, faux-military styled offensive game plan that no longer works in college football at the level the school plays at. If that style is to be used, will is needed from all players to beat the living heck out of any team in front of it. Right now, they model the coach and lack the will needed to at least compete for four quarters.

eagleboston said...

Interim Coach - you mean like Dabo Sweeney? I'll take that!

BCNavy89 said...

It truly is faux military, because if this was the actual military Daz would have been relieved of command

Pete Carmichael a BC grad the offensive Coordinator of the New England saints would be

Doug Flutie for quarter backs coach.
SPAZDAZIO wouldn't be a decent cyo coach. He should pay BC for his lousy pretense
at being a coach. The people who signed him originally and approved his extension should be
driven from the Heights.
Meta and Pete have been given an impossible job. They are quite BOW WORTHY.

ATL_eagle said...

You keep Addazio around to keep as many recruits as possible. We will lose kids this season and we will lose kids with a coaching change. If you go two months under an interim, you risk losing 75% of the current class.

XP: I totally agree with your comments. This game was very sad to watch. Embarrassing. It's time. It's time for Daz to go; now, this week. No more excuses, Fr Leahy. We are sick of watching lousy football played andtired of losing. I bet you don't give a damn about athletics but that check you get from the ACC pays the bills. It would be a shame to lose it because BC is the laughing stock of the ACC.

BCNavy89 said...

The ACC is not going to get rid of BC. It's nice to have an easy to schedule P5 team that is not a threat to the big boys.
As a BC fan, I don't expect a national champion, or even an ACC champion just a team that worries the competition

Unknown said...

Not always the case, several teams have made regular season coaching changes, appointed an interim coach, retained and gained recruits and improved.

XPhaktor said...

I get that there is a chance the school will lose recruits. A chance, if they move on from him. But we must also ask how many recruits will they lose if they keep losing like this. BC either way, will lose the 3 star guys. That's a given. Even if they do keep their commitment, what if the new head ball coach deems them a schematic misfit? Next year is a wash too. This program needs a coach that will tear it all the way down and build it back up. Walkons, JC transfers, grad transfers, the under the radar guys and hungry guys left over should be the bedrock of the team. In the first season under a new coach.

When any organizational structure commits to such a venture, there is always risk. There are no certainties in anything and doing the right thing should not be hostage to what 'could happen' or the inherent risks associated with it. The interim coach as I stated, should be a staffer so the communication and message to all recruits stays intact. Yeah, the best players should reopen their recruitment process as that is what is best for them. However, the program has to do what is best for it and remove the head coach as he inspires no confidence from the AD to the staff, to the team to the band and to the fans.

BC is in a scary place right now and continuing this disturbing trend any further risks the recruits and will lead to even more beat downs. Remember, there are seniors who've seen this before and if the team is in a dogfight with N.Illinois, they may not win another game. Valued recruits de-commit under these circumstances anyways. The message to recruits is that the program is committed to competing. That message holds more water than the hollow one which convinced them to commit in the first place.

First time I've seen BC play this season and from what I saw, there is talent on offense. But the unimaginative and predictable playcalling stifles any chance for repeated success. The end of half sequence just reaffirms that Addazio doesn't have the slightest fucking clue as to what he's doing. Truly stupefying stuff that makes watching these losses even harder.

I also wonder if Landry is nursing an injury. It would explain his limited reps and general ineffectiveness.

Just compete for four quarters and make the opposition feel it for weeks.

Everyone dances around naming the problem which has been with us for the past several coaches. Smart guys recognize problems and fix them or at least, try to fix them. Stupid guys don't realize there is a problem or if they do, they blame others for their own failures. Addazio is not a very smart guy. If fact, he is dumb. Unfortunately, you can't fix dumb.

Everyone connected with College Football knew BEFORE this season started that Addazio was on the HOT SEAT. The GOOD NEWS is that our the new Athletic Director is well known in the BIG TEN and through out the SOUTH, where was born and went to school.

Sadly, this season is a write off, probably 3-4 wins. However, the younger players can gain much experience this year, which will set themselves up for their future career at BC.

This Monday morning,
Sept.18th, Larmond's phone will be ringing off the hook with agent's who have available clients looking for jobs or opportunities at Boston College after this season ends. After 30 days, he will have a list as long as your arm of qualified applicants for Addazio's job. After 60 days, he will have made his selection and that individual will begin his job of studying our roster, commitments, prospective coaches and prospective recruits some of whom he may be able to bring with him from his present job or position.

The day the season ends, Addazio gets his pink slip and we begin the turn around of the BC Football program.

If you play not to lose. You cant win. Inexcusable not to try to throw into the endzone on last play of half. That is not conservative its just plain stupid. 4th and 1 when you have momentum and you run the same slow developing play
How bout trying to win. Play action? As porky pig said "thats all folks" They do have a quarterback and some receivers

Anyone watch USC just now? 5 seconds left in the half, on the 50, tie game at home against unranked Texas. 5 wideouts, find dump down receiver, 56 yard TD pass with :00s on the clock.

Daz pockets the 2 timeouts and doesn't even try to get points at home. Shameful and pathetic.

Evora11 said...

Lay off the sauce Bill. No coach worth his salt wants that lousy job. Poor facilities, no fan base and an inability to recruit.

Navillus said...

Mr. Jarmond, this is your coach. Sound like a winner?:

"Like I said, you watched the game I watched. I know there was big plays in there, but there was a point coming -- I came out of halftime, I felt like, wow, we really got a great opportunity here right now, and then in the third period, and then that critical series right there, like I said, tilted it. But for the half, you know, we ran that draw, we bobbled the snap, and we bobbled the handoff. And I said to myself, okay, I have two choices here: Call a time-out, try and take one shot at the end zone, and I chose that. With this young quarterback, I wanted to get into halftime at 14-13 and let him feel a surge and feel good about what took place there. I was worried that we could have an exchange problem and/or a sack fumble at that point, and I didn't want to take away the momentum and the fight and the confidence of that young quarterback at that point in time, which would have been maybe -- I could have maybe got one more shot off to the end zone."

JERZeagle said...

One thing that must get mentioned: ND Stinks this year. We lost by 3+ scores at home once again. Clemson, va tech, Louisville, Florida state. Wow

Addazio is such a clown. Should have been fired after two historically significant worst offensive seasons in college football history. 5 ears at the helm and hasn't found one person that can play quarterback. Inexcusable.

I wonder what Landry is thinking right now. Great kid. Publicly backed addazio and told the world to back off him and give him a another chance. Now? Now he is sitting on the bench for 40% of the plays. How bizarre.

What is Addazio's record when trailing at halftime?? You'll get your answer as to why BC was blown out in the second half.

Unknown said...

Just get used to getting blown out by 21 points or more against legitimate NCAA competition ; this is your life now. UCONN is the only other opponent BC has a chance at beating this year. Just get used to it, BC doesn't has the balls to fire Addazio and hire a coach like Chip Kelly. Get used to another 10 years of 3-9 or 2-10. This is the best it's going to get. Just get used to it.

STL_eagle said...

Well...we no longer have to wonder IF, we just need to wonder WHEN Daz will get the boot and WHO is his replacement. It is widely understood that Jarmond was brought in to clean house if Daz did not show progress over last year's 6-6 performance. At this point there is little doubt that BC will not match last year.

My guess is that Jarmond is already quietly working his networks to identify candidates. BC's program is not in great shape but it is a Power 5 job and while BC does not pay top dollar, their salary is competitive. Their will be a good list of interested candidates especially with the new practice facility coming online. That said, it is not in BC's nature to fire the coach mid-season so I see the pink slip coming on 11/26 unless BC loses to UConn and in that case 11/19 will be the date.

Hope springs eternal. Go Eagles!

I'm sure Harold Landry wishes he went pro. Looks like he'll be a 5th to 6th round pick next year. Whereas he would've been a 1st or 2nd round pick if he left this year.

STL_eagle said...

I think they have deep enough pockets to hire any coach in the country, however, football is not their top priority...academics are. As such, they will avoid paying top dollar but they will pay a salary that is in line with the median Power 5 head coach salary and is in their mind "competitive". I think finding the right talent and the right fit will be a bigger challenge than coming up with enough dollars.

Bravesbill said...

The excuse not to fire Daz right now because you don't want to lose recruits is bogus. #1, Daz is a terrible recruiter. #2, half of the Daz recruits receive only 1 power conference offer: from BC. #3, if BC does lose a few recruits, it won't be losing much. #4, the recruits who would leave now would also leave if Daz got fired at the end of the year.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

Of course they should fire him now. He has failed miserably and he gets paid way too much money to fail miserably. It won't happen though - Leahy. We are BC - never to excel.

If academics are a top priority then they should go to the AAC or the MAC. They're just mooching off the ACC at this point.

Unknown said...

BC raised over $1.6 billion dollars, money isn't an issue.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

My biggest fear - Leahy hired Jarmond primarily because of his fund raising experience and Bates was let go primarily because of his lack of progress in that area. And athletic performance had little to do with it as Leahy still sees little to no connection between the two. It is still remarkable that Leahy has never once publicly articulated his goals and aspirations for something as visible as athletics at BC. Until Jarmond does something outside the box - I have little faith that anything is going to change up there.

John said...

I received an email from Lindsay Early, Assistant Director of Leadership Giving. She'll be in the Atlanta area and would like to schedule a meeting ,,...... Etc.

She is about to learn even more that "Giving to BC" is indeed tied to athletic performance.

And BC's applications are way down. While there are reasons tied to a process where the school wants only serious applicants, s other reason is who wants to go to a loser school for $65K per year.

Fr. Leahy - you may only care about academics, but your leadership style is showing some serious cracks.

Good luck putting the arm on me until you fire the bums like Steve Addazio.

I don't want a bum like that representing my Alma Mater.

The difference in this game was one thing. The ND o-line. They crushed us and by the 4th quarter we were broken.

Just like the Eagles of the 80's, 90's and early 2000's(and before that) we had very good lines that could control games against highly ranked competition. Those lines helped control the clock and kept the defense rested.

(S)T(D)GS, That was the BC method of success that Jim Harbaugh(advertently or inadvertently) employed at Stanford starting 2007. Since you completely missed the point yesterday I am spelling it out for you.

ND doesn't "stink" this year. They beat Temple and BC by a combined score of 98-36 and lost by a point to the likely SEC East champs. That said, given the athletes they have, they are underachieving. The fault for that lies solely with their asshole head coach. He may be available at the end of the season. You are welcome to him.

From The Boston Sunday Globe (9/17/2017): “Our bell cow was defense,” said BC coach Steve Addazio. “And we don’t give up rushing yards like that. And we let it up on big plays. It wasn’t like when you get pounded to death. Just let up big runs. That’s what happened here. We don’t do that, but we did.”

This is pure ragtime, jabberwocky, goobledegook. Call it what you will but, this is not the insight and analysis a capable coach at any level (the notoriously opaque Belichick included) offers after being soanked by an opponent. This program is in deeper trouble than at any time during the Spaz era. The number of years that will be required to recover from Spazaddazienzi is impossible to gauge at this point.

Kelly is a good coach. He has won everywhere he coached. He is light years better than the three prior ND coaches. How did BC have a top ten D in the country under Brown and now they rank number 99 under Daz, Reid and Pasco? As one ND blogger said BC can only be described as incompetent. Only three incompetents, Daz, Reid and Pasco, could produce a 99 ranking. 2. Fire Daz for cause. He violated his contract by helping Meyer against Clemson during the playoffs. The dramatic rise in Academics came under BC's GREATEST Jesuit Father J. Donald Monan SJ
progress in that realm under Father Leahy has slowed dramatically.
Father Monan's great success academically was matched athletically.
Don Brown with a great offensive coordinator given full control would work well/
Add in Doug Flutie as quarterbacks coach.

So many excellent ommments that are spot-on that there is very little to add.

I hope Jarmond reacts to the gutless, end of the 1st half acceptance of a deficit as everyone else has reacted.

Like all tough talkers, Daz has proven himself to be something of a phony. The message he sent to his kids at the end of the half was so wrong, but so emblamatic of his weaknesses as a coach. Daz thinks we should thank him for only being down 4; forget good field position, a red-hot kicker and two timeouts, let's accept that being down 4 is good enough for BC.

It is not. Let's eat his contract and move on, starting tomorrow. We aren't just losing; we are being embarrassed. We need a new "dude."

To BCNavy89's point, what about BC's leaders? I don't know how many leaders are on this blog, though it's not likely any of us have any leverage at BC. Where are the trustees? We can excoriate Fr.
